Why You Should Stop Tolerating the Gnats

There was this little toolbar to work the camera on my computer that displayed when I turned on my laptop. It had been there since I purchased my computer. And it was really annoying.

Somehow it got in the way of the buttons of the applications I used, and I had to move it a few times a day. There must have been a way to get rid of it. I had halfheartedly tried to figure out how to remove it permanently with no success. It bugged me until three years later, when I got a new computer.

For three years, I continued to suffer the annoyance.

It was like a gnat that flies around your head: you swat it away and it disappears for a while, yet it always seems to return.

When it does, you swat at it again hoping it goes away for good. But it doesn’t. In fact, it brings along lots of friends!

Next thing you know, you have a little swarm buzzing around you that does not go away with a swat. So you finally surrender and go inside to escape. Except the gnats are still there waiting for your return!

My friend Rich Largman (an awesome coach, biz consultant, and writer) shared a term with me for those little nagging little things — tolerations.

We tolerate them because, on the surface, they seem like no big deal. In fact, getting them out of the way seems like more trouble than it’s worth. After all, it takes just a second to work around them.

However, they result in tiny doses of frustration and distraction.

And while they may seem to cost us only tiny, insignificant doses of energy and focus, they tend to add up like that swarm of gnats.

What are your most significant tolerations? Are you ready to swat them away for good?

Great reminder. You energize me to make sure and kill at least one today! Thanks.
